Hint
Do you know that we can compare the number of items in one group with the number of items in another group? For example, use the number series 1_2_3_4_5_6_7_8_9_10_11_12_13_14_15_16_17_18_19_20. The greater number is the one that you can find on the right in the number line. The smaller number is the one that is placed to the left in this line. Remember the comparison signs:
> - more (10>2)
< - less (2<10)
= - the same (1=1)
Sometimes we can easily define which group of items is greater. But it doesn't happen all the time. In this case, counting can help us. If you know how to count objects, this will help you compare groups of items. To find out which group has more objects, we can count the number of objects in each group separately. You will get two numbers that you need to compare with each other using the number series 1_2_3_4_5_6_7_8_9_10_11_12_13_14_15_16_17_18_19_20. Pay attention to the location of the numbers. You can find the greater number on the right in the number line. The smaller number will be placed on the left in the number line. As you can see, the number 4 is to the left of the number 6. So, 4 is less than 6. But at the same time, 4 is to the right of 1. Therefore, we can say that 4 is greater than 1.
If we have as many items in one group as in another one, it means that there is an equal number of items in the groups, or the groups are equal.
To write the result of the comparison uses the following symbols:
> - more (4>1)
< - fewer (4<6)
= - the same (1=1)
