How do we count the items and compare the numbers? We need to select the appropriate comparison sign: > (greater than), < (less than), or = (equal to). In a row of numbers 1_2_3_4_5_6_7_8_9_10_11_12_13_14_15_16_17_18_19_20, the numbers start to increase from left to right. The number 3 stands to the left of 10. So we can say that 3 is less than 10. The greater number is placed in the number line to the right of the smaller one. 19 is located to the right of 13. Thus, 19 is greater than 13.
How do you compare the number and groups of objects? The following comparison signs can help us to do this: > (greater than), < (less than), or = (equal to). It is possible to determine which of the two groups is greater without recalculating. We can count the elements in one group and the other group and then compare the resulting numbers. Remember that you can find the smaller number in the row of numbers 1_2_3_4_5_6_7_8_9_10_11_12_13_14_15_16_17_18_19_20. The smaller one is placed to the left of the greater one. The number 5 stands to the left of 11. Therefore, 5 is less than 11 (5<11). The greater number is located in the number line to the right of the smaller ones. 15 stands to the right of 10. It means that 15 is greater than 10 (15>10). Note that the smallest number in the row is closer to the left of all. The number 1 stands in the far left corner. What is the largest number in the line from 1 to 20? That's right, this is the number 20. We can find it on the right at the very end of the row.
