The picture shows a number of objects: a ball, a flower, a star, a leaf, a book. 

Which objects are before the star? Before means "back”, "behind". We will say that there is a flower before the star. What is before the flower? A ball.  

What is after the star? After means "forward", "then", "ahead". After the star is a leaf of the tree. After the leaf is a book.

Between which objects is the flower located? Between those who are before him and those who are after him. A flower is between a ball and a star.

You know that each number has its own place in the line, which is assigned only to it. We cannot arrange the numbers randomly and call them a numerical sequence. We must keep order. Are these numbers arranged in order? 15, 1, 8, 10, 16, 19, 2. No. This is a random set of numbers.

When we talk about a number line, we mean that the place of each number belongs only to it alone. To the right and to the left of it are always the same numbers. To the left of 10 is always 9 - it is less by 1. To the right of 10 is 11, it is more by 1. In other words, the number 10 is between the numbers 9 and 11.

Due to this property of the immutability of the number line, we are able to name the numbers that are before or after a number. In addition, we can always tell between which two numbers there is a number.

Here is part of the line: 8_9_10_11_12_13_14_15_16_17. Before 9 is 8, and after 9 is 10. 9 is between 8 and 10. Name all the numbers on this line that are up to 13. This is 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. What is the number immediately after 13? This is 14. It is more than 13 by 1.
