When talking about a pattern, they mean a chain, according to which objects are placed. In this case, we may use the method of an alternation. For example, a night follows a day.
It can be a sequence. An example is the arrangement of objects in width from the narrowest to the widest. You can come up with your system to put in-order objects. You can alternate large objects with small ones, or red items with yellow. There is a row of figures in front of you. Someone put them in a given order. Some figures change with others.
