Use this resource to help kids get the hang of estimation. These differentiated worksheets are full of helpful exercises to support learning about comparing numbers up to 20,000 and using the <, > and = symbols.
How do we compare numbers? When comparing numbers, we determine if one number is equal, smaller, or bigger than the other one. If one number is bigger, we use >, which is a “greater than” sign; if the number is smaller, we write the “less than” sign <, and if they are equal, we use =.
To compare numbers, students need to have a good understanding of place value. To identify which number is bigger or smaller, we need to look closer at the value of each digit. Thus, comparing 1467 and 3564, we will find that the second number is greater, as its thousand digit is larger than the thousand digit in 1467. If both numbers have the same value digit in the thousands place, as in 3986 and 3512, then we keep looking until we find a difference.
