These printable worksheets are the perfect learning activity that helps a child get confident using coordinating conjunctions for joining words, phrases, or sentences of equal importance. ‘And’, ‘but’ and ‘or’ are the three coordinating conjunctions that are most frequently used. Please note, ‘so’ , if used in the meaning of ‘therefore’, is used as both a subordinating conjunction and a coordinating one.
These resources are designed to show the variety of contexts these types of conjunctions are used in. In contrast to subordinating conjunctions, which are used to connect a dependent clause to an independent one, coordinating conjunctions join two independent clauses.
To add more variety, you can set up a pair or small group work. For each pair or a group you need a simple board game, a dice, counters and a stack of cards. Students roll a dice, move their counters along the board game, pick a card and say that option. If their peers agree with the answer, a student earns one extra point and moves forward one step. If the answer is wrong, the student doesn’t move further. This can be used as a revision activity, as well as an introductory game for higher level students.
This activity is suitable for 8-9 years old students, U.S. school 3rd grade.
These learning pages are suitable for black and white and color printers.
