Comparing numbers is a significant math concept that helps students build a number sense and recognize relationships between numbers. Use this set of math worksheets to help second, and third-graders master subtracting and comparing numbers. The resource is suitable for school learning or self-practicing at home.
Each worksheet contains several tasks. Children need to subtract numbers in columns and compare the answers by putting the correct sign: “<,” “>,” or “=.”
To compare numbers, follow this instruction:
First, we compare the digits with the greatest place value, for example, hundreds or tens.
If these digits are equal, continue comparing the other digits until we find the different digits.
Let's compare 45 and 67. First, we find the digits of the greatest value. These are 4 and 6, which represent tens. We know that 6 is greater than 4, so 67 is greater than 47. To show this difference, we put the sign: 45 < 67.
If there are numbers 26 and 29, we find that the tens digits are the same. In this case, we continue comparing the other digits, which are 6 and 9. We know that 6 is less than 9, so 26 is less than 29. We put the sign “>” to show the answer: 26>29. Use these clues to perform the tasks.
